Teaching Experience
Art Institute of Seattle
, School of Media As an AIS faculty member from 1994 to 2006, I taught the following classes:

Acoustic Recording and Production Focusing on classical and acoustic jazz, students studied techniques for recording in different venues as well as post-production editing and mastering. I developed this curriculum and first taught it in 2003.

Audio for Digital Media This class covers how to record, edit, and mix multimedia audio, video, and MIDI . Students also explore Web, CD/CD-ROM, and DVD production. I co-authored this class and first taught it in Winter 1999.

Introduction to Audio This general survey class covers all aspects of audio for students majoring in Audio and Video Production.

Audio Recording Sessions In this class on recording techniques, the students record and produce cuts of local bands in one of the Institute’s 24-track studios.

Studio Management Students learn the business practices required to run a production studio, including accounting principles, credit management, marketing, and advertising. I authored this class and first taught it in Fall 1999.

Music Theory In this theory course for non-musicians, students gain a basic understanding of and the language skills required for music production and engineering.

Computer Applications This was a course in general computer use, focusing on Microsoft Office applications.

Software used in these classes included Digidesign’s Pro-Tools; Sony’s Sound Forge, ACID, and Vegas; Adobe’s Photoshop; and Macromedia’s Dreamweaver .

I have also given short-term classes on creativity, pop composition, and personal finance at the Besant Hill  School , Ojai , California , and Camp Indralaya , Eastsound , Washington .

Other Professional Experience:

Centrum Foundation – Technical Director – 2007 Festival Season. Centrum is responsible for concerts and other creative activities at Ft. Warden , Port Townsend, WA. My responsibilities include the technical production of these events.

Music and Media Production: My recording work includes rock, acoustic folk, jazz, and classical music as well as music for film. For the Swedish pianist Magnus Svensson, I’ve produced three CDs. In 2001-2002, we recorded Svensson Plays Bach and Svensson Plays Mozart in the Nybrokajen 11 Concert Hall in Stockholm , using high-resolution technology. Schumann & Kokkonen followed in 2005. That year I also produced Resounding Joy , a CD of Elwood Bernas performing on the Port Townsend First Presbyterian Church’s 113-year-old baroque tracker organ. Several CDs of the Max Aronoff Viola Festivals, held at the Bastyr Chapel in the Seattle area, are among my productions as well.

I have produced many films and videos, as noted below, and have just completed a promotional/educational video presentation for Sound Experience, operators of the Adventuress schooner, berthed in Port Townsend.  Examples of my work can be found on this web site.

Partner: Christensen/Clement, Seattle This partnership provided business consulting, accounting, and other financial services for small businesses and nonprofit corporations, primarily those in the arts and human service. I also designed, installed, and supported accounting and relational database software (Access and FoxPro).

Partner: Coffin/Christensen Film Productions, Seattle This company produced educational, promo­tional, and public relations films, videotapes, and printed media. We developed the first complete animation studio in the Northwest, and about 60% of our film/TV titles were animation. My roles included writing, photography, editing, and sound production. The company also released two records (the days of vinyl) of film music, both of which I produced.

Musician/Performer (Current) I perform both as a single act (vocal, guitar, flute) and as a band member (vocal, sax, flute, bass), playing jazz and folk several times a year around the Northwest. In 1989, 1993, 1995, and again in 1998/99, I joined a Swedish guitarist/vocalist for concert tours of Sweden , performing in schools and community centers.

Community Service

The schooner Adventuress , member/volunteer crew. Sound Experience, which operates the Adventuress, provides educational cruises for all ages. I’ve been a volunteer deckhand since 2000. In 2005, I produced a fundraising CD of the sounds of the ship, and have just completed an informational/fundraising video of ship activities.

M Bar C Ranch, Whidbey Island.  Assist in horse handling and riding instruction for participants in the Ranch programs.

Max Aronoff Viola Institute, board member/treasurer. Institute programs include an annual music retreat and a concert festival in suburban Seattle . I also produced concert CDs of their festival.

Music Center of the Northwest, board member/treasurer 1995 to 2001 . My activities included developing long-term goals and new avenues of growth. I revised the Center’s accounting system. I also produced the Center’s first CD, celebrating their 10th anniversary.

Orcas Island Foundation/Camp Indralaya, Eastsound , Washington , board member/presenter. I was a board member and treasurer for a total of 12 years. I also led several programs on the creative process.

Youth Care/Orion Center, Seattle , board chair, treasurer 1988-91, interim executive director 1990-91. I served as executive director during a reorganization of the agency. Other tasks included designing and implementing a new automated accounting system tailored to fund accounting.

Northwest AIDS Foundation, Seattle (now the Lifelong AIDS Alliance), board member. I served on the board for three years during the early years of this organization, served on the Finance Committee, and supported the staff in using the accounting software, which I designed.

Seattle Personal Transit (originally Senior Wheels), co-founder. Personal Transit was formed to address the transportation needs of seniors in Seattle .

Volunteer Travel Experiences:
Riding instructor/guide:
In 2011 I was an instructor and guide for Marianna Hayworth at her horse farm in KatiKati New Zealand.
Riding instructor/guide: In 2010 I assisted Patricia Barlow-Erik at her ranch in New Mexico, gentling wild mustangs just brought in from the range.
Horse training: In 2010 I was an instructor and guide for Wilderness Experience on the West Cape in South Africa.
Riding Instruction: In 2009 I assisted in riding instruction at the Silva Riding Academy on the Island of Corfu, Greece.
ESL Instructor: In 2006, I was a volunteer ESL teacher for Bridges for Education in Lithuania .
